Herbal Medicine Fact Sheet by Les Rees

Navicular Disease

The navicular bone is situated in the foot close to the pedal bone and is part of the formation of the pedal joint. The disease is a break down of this bone causing erosion and necrosis. Often spurs are formed as a result of irritation due to lack of blood supply. Horses will often put more weight on the toe to avoid pain which can cause problems by contracting the heel. However, symptoms appear and disappear making diagnosis problematical without the aid of an X-ray.

Changes in the bone are caused by:
  • Direct and indirect injury, the latter via pressure effects stemming from the deep flexor tendon
  • Interference of the blood supply
  • Repeated concussion
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Derangement in the development of bone
  • Bad shoeing.

Herbal Medicine treats this by aiding the circulatory system to provide vascular flow, strengthening hepatic cleansing, aiding the re-growth of damaged tissue and strengthening excretory output.
