Tony Rees is a scientist and occasional musician who currently works for CSIRO, Australia's national science agency. Originally from the UK, he studied botany, and then phytoplankton ecology at Leeds University before a stint running the electron microscope facility for the Micropalaeontology Unit in the Geology Department at University College, London.

He moved to Tasmania (Australia) to work at CSIRO in the mid 1980s and currently runs the Data Management group for the CSIRO Division of Marine and Atmospheric Research, where among other things he writes software that connects various CSIRO databases to the web, and maintains and develops the c-squares spatial indexing, spatial search, and mapping system. He is also involved in the international OBIS and AquaMaps projects, and co-administers the Regional OBIS Node for Australia.

For recreation Tony plays guitar, mandolin and bass with Hobart-based acoustic/electric trio Martinique, also rhythm jazz guitar with a quartet named "Take Your Pick" also featuring Allan Brown, James Dobell and Hamish Stephenson.
